  • Calcium Capsule

Benefits: People who are unable to meet the calcium daily intake allowance from their diet. Calcium deficiency, Females during pregnancy or lactation, Postmenopausal females and Seniors with insufficient daily intake of calcium.

Key Knowledge:

Calcium plays a very important role in maintaining the normal physiological function. It is the most abundant mineral in the body, is found in some foods, added to others, available as a dietary supplement, and present in some medicines (such as antacids). Calcium is required for vascular contraction and vasodilation, muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling and hormonal secretion, though less than 1% of total body calcium in needed to support these critical metabolic functions.

Reservoir of Calcium- bone and teeth

Serum calcium is very tightly regulated and does not fluctuate with changes in dietary intakes; the body uses bone tissue as a reservoir for, and source of calcium, to maintain constant concentrations of calcium in blood, muscle, and intercellular fluids. The remaining 99% of the body's calcium supply is stored in the bones and teeth where it supports their structure and function.  Bone itself undergoes continuous remodeling, with constant resorption and deposition of calcium into new bone.

Calcium intake and age:

The balance between bone resorption and deposition changes with age. Bone formation exceeds resorption in periods of growth in children and adolescents, whereas in early and middle adulthood both processes are relatively equal. In aging adults, particularly among postmenopausal women, bone breakdown exceeds formation, resulting in bone loss that increases the risk of osteoporosis over time.

RDA of calcium intake:

Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is designated as average daily level of intake sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97%-98%) health individuals.

They are listed in the following table in milligrams (mg) per day.

Dosage and directions for use: 1-2 softgels at a time, once a day

Ca++ Absorption and Excretion

The absorption of Ca++ by the human body consists of three methods: (a) Ca is absorbed into the blood from food through the intestine tract; (2) Ca re-absorption of digestive juice in the intestine; (c) Ca re-absorption by the renal tubular in crude urine.

The absorption of Ca++ is classified into active and passive forms. For products of passive absorption, the oral absorption rate can reach 40% even 95%.
There are five factors contributing to Ca absorption: (a) gastric concentration. (b) diet: the ratio of Ca and Phosphorous in food and the amount of fat, carbohydrate, protein and oxalic acid. (c) hormone: calcitonin, estrogen, adrenaline, thyroxin have effect on Ca absorption. (d) VD and the derivatives. (e) age: Ca is absorbed more slowly as people age; this is especially true of women.

99% of blood Ca enters into the bone. The main excretion avenues of Ca are digestive tract, urine, skin (sweat), and breast. Daily filtration by glomerulus is about 9000 to 10000mg, 8800mg of which is re-absorbed by renal tubular and 200mg is excreted into the urine.
Calcium and Bone Metabolic DiseasesAdult metabolic diseases are usually caused by insufficient deposition of mineral salts in bone due to disturbance of equilibrium of Calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium.

Osteoporosis occurs because of softened bones, and bone depletion caused by a lack of unequilibrium between the dicipation of old bone and biogenesis of new bone. The symptoms are bone aches, fragility, and malformation of bones. The mechanism is related to endocrine hormone, bone transfer, Calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium metabolism. Bone metabolic diseases usually include neonatal, infant, children and adolescence rickets and osteoporosis.
Calcium and Cardiocerebrovascular DiseasesRecently, cardiocerebrovascular diseases, like arteriosclerosis, hypertension and heart diseases, are becoming the leading causes of death by disease.

In cardiocerebrovascular system, Calcium plays a leading role in myocardial contraction and dilation, blood flow and maintenance of blood pressure. The disturbance of Calcium metabolism has an effect on the development of cardiocerebrovascular diseases.
Calcium and Nervous System
The nervous system is the center of regulation in the human body. It ensures the normal operation of internal organs. To maintain these activities, a sufficient nutritional supply is essential. Besides required protein, fat, carbohydrate and vitamins, Calcium is indispensable to the nervous system.

Calcium is an essential element in maintaining the integrity of nerve system. It transfers messages, especially from nervous system and maintains the excitability of the nerve cells. Ca metabolism disturbance is an important factor although the real causes of nerve system diseases are complex. Thus, reasonable Calcium supplement in the treatment of nervous system diseases is recommended.
Calcium and Digestive System DiseaseThe nervous system is the center of regulation in the human body.

Calcium and Digestive System DiseaseCalcium is indispensable in the control and maintenance of digestive tract smooth muscle, activities of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve, secretion of digestive enzymes, and activation. In the process of using carbohydrate for the production of energy, Calcium combines with amylase to activate it and makes it degrade starch into glucose more rapidly, which is easily assimilated in the intestine. For protein assimilation, an important enzyme, C-kinase is required. Calcium is essential for the activation of C-kinase that is a catalyzer for multiple enzymes, such as GC et al. Therefore, the digestive function is impaired by Calcium deficiency, thereby leading to occurrence of digestive diseases.

Common diseases of digestive tract are ulcers and hepatic diseases. Calcium supplementation is very important in the digestive function.
Calcium and Respiratory DiseaseThe respiratory system functions by the intake of external oxygen into human body. Oxidization can supply energy to vital activities. Meanwhile, carbon dioxide is removed from body to ensure a functional metabolism.

Ca deficiency easily causes diseases and dysfunction of respiratory system to impair energy metabolism. For patients receiving therapy, Calcium supplementation should be considered. This relieves the disturbance of Calcium metabolism.
Calcium and Urinary System The Calcium metabolism theory can be traced to the renal function in traditional Chinese medicine, in which the concept of “shen-kidney” is related to the anatomic kidney, though mostly to renal function. Vital activities are mainly accomplished through internal organs.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the heart controls blood vessel; lung controls the skin; liver controls the nerves; the spleen controls muscles and the kidney controls bones. The kidney is essential for life, the gate of respiration and the source of “san jiao”. The diseases caused by disturbance of Calcium metabolism have similar symptoms and points to those of “kidney-deficiency” in Chinese medicine, which is divided into kidney yang-deficiency and yin-deficiency that mean functional disturbance. Signs include impaired immunity, complement system, and the phagocytic function of reticuloendothelial system.
The urinary system is important for waste excretion. About 1.5 L of blood passes through the kidneys which re-absorb waste in blood and superfluous water into the urine that is excluded from body finally.

Calcium is filtered and re-absorbed by the renal tubule with superfluous Calcium passing into urine. Renal diseases may affect metabolism of Calcium, VD and PTH to inactivate VD activity. Impaired Calcium absorption and excretion result in diseases like acute nephritis and nephrolithiasis.
Calcium and Reproductive System

Recently, a new concept for genital health has been proposed. It requires people to keep a healthy body and retail social activity, as well as remaining disease-free. There is a difference between male and female genital systems. Its main function is reproduction and hormone secretion.

Calcium plays an important role in maintaining of germ cell reproduction, transferring, fertilization and secretion of sexual hormone. Calcium supplement can prevent male and female sexual dysfunction and relieve dysmenorrhea.
Calcium and Sensory OrgansCalcium is essential for maintaining the physiological function of sensory organs.

The disturbance of Calcium and phosphorous metabolism by Calcium deficiency causes various diseases of multiple sensory organs.
Calcium and CataractsThe main cause of cataracts is due to low concentration of blood Calcium or insufficient parathyroid function.

Hypocalcemia affects membrane permeability to cause more Calcium deposited in crystal. Gradually, a thick tonica albuginea is formed to make blurred vision and even cause blindness. Reasonable Calcium and VD supplement will help curtail Calcium deposition in eyeball and relieve cataract.
Calcium and Immune System

The ability of human body to prevail against the onslaught of diseases and maintaining itself is called immunity. Immunity consists of immune organs, immune cells and molecules. Congenital deficiency or secondary injury in the immune system will incur immunodeficiency diseases because of the inability of human body to resist foreign invasions of bacteria and virus.

Over-immune reaction then results in an overreaction and injury to human body during process of destruction of foreign invader. Only normal immunity can ensure health. Calcium has the abilities to regulate the immune system, and assist in anti-allergy and anti-infection.
Calcium and Hematological DiseasesBlood, which is pumped by heart, is circulated into all the organs, tissues and cells to availability of substance exchange between blood, intracellular and extracellular fluids, thus stabilizing the body’s internal environment.

Calcium is important in blood flow, buffering function, immunity, and prevention of bleeding and coagulation. A variety of diseases will occur due to Calcium deficiency. Prompt Calcium supplement is essential for prevention of hematological diseases. Calcium supplementation is helpful for blood coagulation and anemia.
Calcium and CancerCancer results from abnormal cell division and regeneration. This abnormality is related to an abnormal Calcium signal.

Hypocalcemia makes the secretion of PTH elevated to draw on bone Calcium stock. Repeated process is a poor state of health, called hyperparathyroidism with osteoporosis and vast Calcium into blood.

The data from 100 patients of hyperparathyroidism with 100 normal controls show that incidence rate of cancer is significantly high in thyroid, gallbladder, stomach and breast in hyperparathyroidism than normal
